Why is my unit not responding (aka timing out)?

A unit that is not responding to a track request, starter toggle, or any other type of command can be caused by a number of things. Typically if a unit did not respond you can simply try again and it will work without a problem. However, if a unit does not respond for an inordinate amount of time it is typically caused by issues that occur in one of the following two categories.

1. Wireless Coverage or Latency - If the unit is currently in an area that has spotty or even non-existent coverage then it will not respond because it may not receive any command that is sent. Occasionally, a command may experience latency which would cause the unit to respond after timing out. If a unit is only experiencing issues with latency the customer can visit the "Trail History" page to view any response from the unit that occurred later than expected.

2. Physically Related Issue - If the unit has been tampered with and/or removed from its power source there would not be a response unless the unit was drawing off of the backup battery. If the unit was poorly installed or mounted it may loose connectivity to its' power source and/or ground. Units need to be installed according the specifications indicated in the manual. Installers should prepare the unit for the worst of circumstances to assist in avoiding any complications with the service. This means securing the unit in such a way that would protect it from bumpy roads, rain and/or moisture. If a physical issue occurs that causes the unit to not respond then the support staff has no means to rectify the situation until the physical problem is addressed.

Why does my unit show up in the middle of the ocean when I track it?

This typically is an indication that your unit is experiencing GPS obstruction. There should be a message explaining the problem you are encountering. When this happens try temporarily repositioning the GPS antenna on the top of the vehicle, wait 15 minutes and attempt to track. If the unit tracks, then the previous GPS antenna placement was inadequate. Try placing the GPS antenna in another location. GPS antennas can be obstructed by building structures, metal, and other dense materials.
